"All four of us played in '87... first time at the 'Crystal' in San Diego,
famous for the shirts and not much else... Wackem', Hackem', Timba and BOD,
great parties...."

In 1978, my eleventh grade year, a few guys and I began playing a game similar to hotbox, or goaltimate. One of the guys said his brother played for the Condors, an Ultimate Frisbee team. We were very impressed and began to practice with a few Condors at pick up games. We decided to form our own team called the Ultimate Bum's Disk Squad (UBDS). So began the BUM story, with Doug the Bum, Dan the Bum, Greg the Bum, Chip the Bum, Dean the Bum and so on. That summer we played in a Summer league run by the Condors. Tom Kennedy (TK) and the friend's brother Brian Humphrey played with us and taught us the game. I was 17 at the time and the Condors had just come back from losing to Glasborro State in the '79 Nationals. The BUMs played a few small tournaments my senior year and then many went to college and played there. Several of us stayed in SB and played with the Condors. The Condors at the time were mostly in their mid 20's and were, for the most part, mature. Here we were, a bunch of wild high school kids. Quite the contrast. Thus, the nickname, and by the way, the proper way to write it is:

Doug...The Bum

The name came from our high school Ultimate team and there are many other Bums running around out there. However it was certainly enhanced by bumming around the Ultimate scene for a while.
