Tempe New Year Ultimate Fest
Feb. 6-7, 1999

SATURDAY

Condors vs. Highway 85: 13-5
Condors vs. Monsoon : 13-9
Condors vs. Longmont Foods: 13-7
Condors vs. Lollipop Men: 13-3

Game 1 v. Highway 85 -
Started close at 2-2. We went up 8-3 on a Taro no-look wraparound backhand to Brent. They hucked back to make it 8-4. We hucked right back, Jason to JD, 9-4. We won 13-4

Game 2 vs. Monsoon (Tucson) -
We were down early, 5-3, then went up 12-9. Jacob called a time-out and was promptly handblocked. Jay then handblocked right back and we scored for the win. 13-9

Game 3 vs. Longmont Foods - Down 3-2, Corey gets a D skying a foul calling boxboy. They huck right back to Corey's man and again he catches the block only to find out the thrower called a foul on Brent. Corey then skies his guy a third time to keep the block and we score. A memorable moment, Taro playing D in his endzone, he intercepts for the goal, no wait, he throws the goal, no wait, TRAVEL! 13-7

Game 4 vs. Lollipop Men -
Nothing to memorable in this game. They had just come off a 1 point loss to Longmont who scored twice to win. They had nothing left. We crushed 13-4. We win the pool and celebrate with Bud in the can. Jay brings it!

SUNDAY

Condors vs Carleton All Stars 15-7 : Quarterfinals
Condors vs Sick of It All 15-13 : Semifinals
Condors vs Seattle 19-18 : Finals

Qtrs vs Carleton All Stars -
Note- these are the same players that the Tide beat at Nationals a few years ago; some of that bitterness came out. While I was getting the hammies massaged, the game began and we were quickly down 2-0. We then scored 3 and soared from there taking the Carleton guys 15-7. One memorable play was Jacob hucking to Jason who made an incredible trailing edge layout catch.

Semis vs Sick of It All -
We started down 2-1, then went up 5-4. The game stayed close all the way through. We kept a 1-2 point lead through the whole game. In the first half there was a very interesting "jewelry time out" called by a Sick player after catching the disc and realizing the valuable pendant he was wearing had come off. Sean from our team kept counting until the Sick player called a regular time-out, at stall 7, which he never actually took. The disc was then checked in at 2. Is this rule in the new ammendments? Anyway, that caused a few heated exchanges. Mostly, the game was that of very efficient offense. We won 15-13.

Finals vs Seattle -
The Condors swooped and pummeled all comers. We squandered a five point lead, but hung tough to beat Seattle 19-18.

Tournament Champions !!!

The Tide did well at 3-3. They spanked Nice Guys, lost by one amid much controversy to Dolemite (Saucy Jackish/Jam types), but dropped their
b-bracket to a 10-man Los Guapos squad (ouch!). All in all a good weekend for Santa Barbara ultimate. Congrats everyone.

April Fools West
U.C. Santa Cruz
April 3-4, 1999

Saturday:
Cold, windy and even a rain/hail delay.
Condors vs Barry White..........................10-3
Condors vs UC Davis..............................15-3
Condors vs Yankee Clipper (Love Gun)..12-8

Sunday:
Sunny, mild with a very slight breeze (aka beautiful day).
Condors vs ????........win......quarters
Condors vs SOIA.....14-10...semis

So it was a Condors vs Matza Balls finals:
Close at first, then MBs went up 12-8. Condors came back to almost even it up at 13-12. Then I think the fact that the Condors only had 11 players began to take its toll vs the MBs 18 guys. The MBs pulled ahead to stay and won the game 17-12 and the tournament. This is the 4th time in the last 5 years that the Matza Balls have won Fools West.

Some amazing bids and grabs in the finals. I think Stephen got most of it on video. Towards the end, it appeared to me that the Condors were playing on sheer guts with their bodies saying 'stop', but their minds saying 'never'.
Great game. Great team. Great guys.

Pickups for the tourney were Ted from Portland (who is moving here in two weeks), Dennis from SF, and Sean from Seattle. Everyone played well as a team, especially Steve Dugan, who despite all of the distractions of running the tournament and getting over the flu, completely took over a couple of the games on Sunday with some stellar defense. JD Lobue was the standout on offense for most of the tournament; seemed like everytime I turned my head, he was burning his guy deep by 10 yards. As Shep said in the middle of the Seattle game: "JD, you're the biggest short guy I've ever seen." The heart-breaking loss in the finals on our own turf probably came down to an inability to make some easy plays in the first half. We snapped out of it in the second half and should have taken the game, but Blaze prevailed in an opposite fashion to how they went down to the Condors in Tempe. There's no doubt in my mind, that if we had stayed consistent in the first half with how we had been playing the rest of the tournament, we would have beaten Blaze by at least a few goals in the finals. Well, material to inspire us each to work on improving ourselves to the point of taking care of business next time. There will be no more losses this year.

24th Annual Cal States
U.C. Santa Cruz
June 5-6, 1999

Saturday:
Condors 13 - Calistona 6
Condors 13 - B-Sides 5
Condors 13 - Pirates 6
Condors 4 -- Jam 13
Condors 13 - Barry White 5

Sunday:
Quarters - Condors 15 Snake 8
Semis ---- Condors 15 Pirates 6
Finals ---- Jam 15 Condors 13

Steve Dugan Brent Russell Ryan Yarbrough

The Condors looked sharp in the quarters and semis. Very few offensive errors (I don't think I saw any) and great D. Jam came out strong in the finals and went up 3-0. The Condors then matched points for a while and the game went to 8-5. Jam then pulled away even more to 11-6 (I think). With the game to 15, Jam went up 14-10. It looked over... but the Condors began to play their game and fought back. 14-11, 14-12, 14-13, and the Condors got another D. It was great Ultimate. But Jam got the disc back and scored for the 15-13 win. Next match in Scotland!
