Due to the tournament rain out in San Luis, the Black Tide decided to have
a shoot out between the X and Y teams in Santa Barbara on Sunday.

Recap of X vs Y Game on Sunday:
[by Jonathan Hester]

The X-team took an early lead of 3-1 with good throws coming from CJ and Mike. Y-team made up ground quickly and took half 9-7 with Asa making up three steps on Dumptruck on a long huck from Jonny. Other highlights from the half included great defense by rookies Rory and Alex and good spirit from Mike Brown. The X-team began the second half with a "Prove It" cheer, initiating a "talk with your play, not your mouth" second half. The Y-team widened their lead, receiving at 12-8 thanks to great deep defense by Asa Wilson and Douglas Baker and a breakmark goal thrown by Nick Price. Rookies Purdy and Tyler were able to complete a goal on a fast break after a huck to Tyler. X-teamers Clint and Alex made good cuts deep and underneath and made consistent catches to help the X-team get within 3 at 13-10. X-team refused to capitulate and intensity flared as mutual respect between top players from each team prompted better play. The closing points included sloppy play from both teams, but Y held on for a 17-14 win.

[comments below by UCSD TD]
In the game between UCSB X and UCSD L, there were some controversies
on the score of the game. Throughout the intense battle, no one remembered
the exact score at halftime. It was assumed 8-6, and an agreement was made
between the two teams' captains that the game would be played to 11
because we were running out of daylight. After the agreement was made, a
squid captain pointed out that the point total should have been odd, but that
issue was never resolved between the two teams. As we ran out of daylight,
the score was 10-9, advantage squids. At the time, it was the only game
remaining, and I ended the round of play due to the low visibility, and I left it
up to them to decide whether they wanted to play it out the next morning. Of
course, no one is going to accept a loss without a fight. After much discussion,
the captains agreed to play early next morning. The squids pulled to the tide at
8am next morning, UCSB had an unforced error at the goal line, and Squids
put the game away 11-9.

Eric to Mike vs Idaho St.

Our first game of the day was against Idaho State. They seemed like a nice group of guys, and had spent the night on the fields after getting in late the night before. They played a little zone, which we handled easily. Final score was in the vicinity of 13-4. Apparently Brit is quite the spirited ultimate player, as he received an Idaho State ultimate hat after the game for his stellar spirit.

The next game was against Utah State. Callahan goal from Nate Bouxsein. Final score 13-1.

The final pool play game was against UC Davis with the winner taking the pool. Our offense was good, as was our D with another Callahan goal, this time coming from Mike Brown from the wing spot in zone D. Davis wasn't able to keep it close, and the Tide rolled to a 13-5ish win.

The feature game at night in Harder Stadium was a crossover game against the University of Arizona. While Arizona likes to shine in the preseason, it wasn't showing here, and we quickly jumped out to a 7-1 halftime lead with the help of a Callahan goal from Crazy Nate. They played some zone after half, which was ineffective against the patient handling of Mike and Eric Dahlke. Several mental lapses on our part made the second half closer than the first, but we closed the game out with a 13-6 win.

Having gone undefeated the first day we earned a first round bye, and met UC Santa Cruz in the Quarter Finals. We didn't play our best, but solid play from Andy, Jonny, Asa, and Timmy got us the win, something like 13-10.

Our semi final game was against Stanford, who had been getting the best of us in recent memory. We took an early lead as long hucks from Jonny and Mike were finding Asa and Tim for goals. Edmo was playing solid zone defense, and Ben Hey was plugging away on defense as well, as the Tide looked sharp in taking a 8-5 halftime lead. 3 quick points by Stanford tied the game, as we had a few lapses on offense. We traded to 10s with skying grabs from Tim and Eric. The game was unfortunately soft capped, so all we had to do was score twice in a row to win. After a score on offense, Stanford turned it over against our zone defense, and a suspect throw from Tim to Edmo was touched by a Stanford defender, but Edmo was still able to catch it for the 12-10 win. Stanford is a very solid team, and there are sure to be more close games with them this year.

Finals was against Cal, who had been trouncing people all weekend. The first half was very close, with each team switching being up 1 or 2. Hucks to Asa were being completed, though we faltered a little, and Cal took an 8-7 halftime lead. The second half was no different from the first, as it was very tight the whole way. CJ, Mike and Jonny were all throwing pretty hucks which were being completed while Nate Bouxsein, Andy, and Scot Perry were all playing solid defense. Sadly, Ben Hey was knocked loopy after a hard layout bid from a Cal defender, and had to be taken to the hospital with a nasty concussion. Nate Bouxsein also suffered a hamstring injury which forced him out of the game, which put us without two of our best defenders. The game was very close the whole way, and both teams agreed that there would be no cap. This lengthened the game considerably, as there was no clear cut winner when the score was tied 15-15. Layout D's from Mike and Rory, and unexpected footblocks from Tim and Eric kept it close until the end, but Cal was able to win 20-18.

While we fell short of our goal of winning the tournament, it was a great experience for our young team, and we look forward to building on it.

[recap from Susan Perry]
The Tide had 12 players on Saturday and only 10 Sunday. Nate was out with a pulled muscle and unfortunately in the first game Sunday Nick broke his arm! If I understood correctly, he was doing a backhand throw when a member from the other team collided with him. The scores were close so they obviously kept trying.

[comments on finals by Jonathan Hester]
We got pretty fired up in our pre-game endzone drill and came out very strong. We started on D and went up 3-1.  I think we only had one turnover, which happened immediately after a questionable travel call recalled a goal. We took half 8-1 or 8-2 with a few D's on their goaline and also great offensive and defensive deep game. Squids threw on their zone on the rest of their pulls. We had 4 or 5 turnovers for the first 3 points (which they scored), but had pretty good chances of scoring on each of those first 3 points. We actually had it on their goaline each time, but had two endzone throwaways and one endzone drop. After this 3 point lull, we just about traded points for the rest of the game. There was no wind, but our zone O did look pretty good. We had some good deep defense from Jereme, Alex, Tim and Ed. One last point to note about the game: there weren't as many arguments and calls from either team like there normally are between us.

Squids jumped on us - 2-0 I think. We found our rythm and ended up taking half 8-7. It was upwind/downwind so there was lots of zone and we were just able to get a couple more upwinders than them. The first few points following half were full of turnovers. In one of these, Tim threw a short, stall-9 pass in the endzone. Nate and Mike both made bids, and Mike ended up landing on Nate's head resulting in a fractured jaw and a concussion (he played the next day). After a few hell points, we got our act together and increased our lead, eventually winning at 15-11. Dan had a nice D and score to make it 14-10. One memorable play happened after the Squids turned it over in our endzone and set a zone. Asa took off from the deep spot and I jacked a downwind flick. Asa had the two deeps on his tail and his first attempt resulted in a 15 yard 'mack' into the endzone, which he stuck with and caught. Unfortunately, there was a travel call and it was sent back.

Today was the big game: UCSB vs. Colorado. Colorado went up early scoring the first two. Tide answered back to tie it at 2. Then Colorado went up 4-2. After that it kind of went back and forth but Tide took half 8-7. I think it was late in the first half when Mike Brown scored a goal with a Colorado defender draped on his back. Mike got up and spiked it, then the Colorado guy kicked it and Mike Brown then respiked it. This led to a couple of shoves and pretty much the rest of the game was played on high emotion from both sides. Tide received to start the second half and scored to go up 9-7. I don't think we ever lost our lead but Colorado hung around. The most exciting play was when Tim Hand went deep and Johnny put up a big back hand huck to him. Tim was being covered by this guy Bo from Colorado who had been coming down with everything. However, this time, Tim skies him and lands down seemingly in the end zone. He gets up and gives an excited spike only to have an observer call him out (he said Tim landed on the end zone line at the front of the goal). With Tide players all over the field, Colorado picks up the disc and races and starts moving it up field. People are scrambling to get off the field and the players that were on were trying to find their men. Colorado is moving it up quickly when Mike Brown gets a great poach D and Tide eventually scores. Tide ended up winning 15-11. The winning score came on a nice catch by Edmund who toed the sideline and reached and held on to it.

An additional note: congrats to our big man, Alex, for cleating up after Colorado went up 2-0 on 2 floaty hucks. He had a pretty bad ankle sprain and wasn't planning on playing, but stuck out the whole game.

[comment by parent Ken Brown]
We can be very proud of the Tide. They played hard, as a team, never doubting they could win. Yea Black!

Per Edmo's dad, "It captures that determination that paid off so well against Colorado."

Happy Faces!
